The head of the Dagestan Republic in Russia reported that Russian air defenses destroyed a drone on Nov. 6 morning over Kaspiysk.
Sergey Melikov said on his Telegram account that “the circumstances of the incident were being investigated.”
The downing of the drone in Dagestan follows a drone strike that was unprecedented in Chechnya, which borders Dagestan.
While Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader, blamed the drone strike in Chechnya on Ukraine a Ukrainian intelligence source suggested that the incident could have been the result of a feud involving Kadyrov and officials coming from Dagestan or Ingushetia.
A video shared on Russian Telegram channels shows a drone exploding at 6:55 am local time. Residents reported hearing gunfire as well as a loud explosion.
Mash, a Ukrainian A-22 Flying Fox, was identified as the drone used in the incident. According to reports, a girl was injured.
Local authorities have confirmed that the airport in Makhachkala has suspended its operations for an undetermined period of time due to this incident.
Ukraine has not claimed responsibility. The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify the claims.
