**British Soldier Killed in Ukraine**
A former British soldier who went to Ukraine to help the war effort against Russia was killed by a fellow fighter. Daniel Burke, 36, from Manchester, died in August last year.
The coroner’s court heard that Burke was helping Ukrainian armed forces but was shot and killed far from the frontline. The suspect, an Australian national, is wanted by Ukrainian police for fleeing the country after the killing.
**How He Died**
Abdelfetah ‘Adam‘ Nourine, a fighter in the Ukrainian army, told police he accidentally shot Burke while they were practicing drills 27 miles away from the frontline. However, investigators found that it was impossible to fire the gun by accident.
A post-mortem examination showed that Burke had been shot at least three times – in his head, neck, and chest. The coroner said Burke was unarmed and unable to defend himself when he was killed.
**Investigation**
The police investigation found that Nourine had given different versions of events and had claimed to have fired two shots, one accidentally while carrying Burke during a training exercise, and another for unknown reasons. However, the ballistics evidence suggested that it was impossible to fire the gun by accident.
Ukrainian police are still trying to bring Nourine in for further questioning, but he has not been caught yet. The BBC understands that Ukrainian authorities have requested help from Australian diplomats to assist with his arrest.
**Reaction**
Burke’s mother said she would never get over her son’s death and felt it was impossible that the killer should be allowed to live a normal life after what happened. She expressed frustration at the lack of response from Australian diplomatic authorities to help bring Nourine in for questioning.
