**Danish Churches Criticize World Council of Churches**
Denmark’s National Council of Churches has made a surprising attack on the World Council of Churches (WCC). The Danish council is questioning why the WCC took only four days to condemn Ukraine’s law against the Russian Orthodox Church, while waiting two years to speak out against Russia’s “holy war” ideology.
**A Double Standard?**
The Danish council wants to know who benefits from the WCC’s different responses. They are asking why the WCC acted quickly in condemning Ukraine’s law, but didn’t take similar action when Russia’s leader called the invasion of Ukraine a “holy endeavor”.
**Ukraine’s Law Explained**
Ukraine passed a law earlier this year that requires the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to sever ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. The law also defines the “Russian world” ideology as racist and xenophobic. While not explicitly naming the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, it requires religious organizations affiliated with Russia to prove they have broken ties.
**Experts Weigh In**
Religious experts say Ukraine’s law is more symbolic than practical, and doesn’t constitute an automatic ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. However, implementing the law will require complex procedures, including approximately 4,000 lawsuits against congregations under the church’s jurisdiction.
