**Treason Law to be Reinstated in Georgia**
Georgia is planning to bring back a law that makes it a crime to betray the country. This change comes after many Georgians felt their government had betrayed them during a war with Russia in 2008.
According to Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, the law was removed by the previous government before the 2008 war. From today’s perspective, this is seen as clear evidence that the government planned to betray its own country. The war resulted in Russia taking control of 20% of Georgia’s territory and causing significant economic damage.
Matikashvili said the events of 2008 were not isolated incidents. He also mentioned the sale of important energy assets to Russia after the war as another example of betrayal by the previous government. An investigative commission is currently looking into these issues.
The reinstatement of the treason law will define what actions are considered a crime against the country and homeland. This move aims to prevent similar betrayals from happening again in the future.
