European Structure Sets Precondition for Georgian Delegation
The European Parliament’s Assembly (PACE) is proposing a precondition for recognizing the mandates of Georgia’s delegation. The condition is that new parliamentary elections must be held before April 2025.
But Georgia’s government does not agree with this precondition. Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Procedural Issues and Rules Committee, said it is “incomprehensible” why a European structure would set such a condition. He also stated that any precondition undermines the will of Georgian people who voted for the ruling party, “Georgian Dream“.
The PACE Monitoring Committee has proposed two options regarding Georgia’s delegation. The first option involves recognizing the mandates under certain conditions. These conditions include holding new elections in 2025 and respecting human rights.
In this scenario, if the conditions are not met by April 2025, the Georgian delegation’s mandates could be suspended or reconsidered by PACE. The second option proposed by the Monitoring Committee involves not ratifying the Georgian delegation’s mandates at all.
Georgia’s government is opposed to any precondition that would undermine the will of its people. They believe that Europe should respect the decision made by voters in parliamentary elections held last year. The OSCE/ODIHR report concluded that these elections were fair and competitive, with no significant violations.
