New President Elected in Georgia
A new president has been elected in Georgia. Mikheil Kavelashvili was chosen by the Electoral College.
Davit Matikashvili, a politician and Chair of the Parliamentary Procedural Issues and Rules Committee, spoke about Kavelashvili’s election. He said that Kavelashvili will restore order to the country’s presidential institution, which he believes has been damaged by Salome Zurabishvili‘s actions.
Matikashvili expressed confidence in Kavelashvili’s ability to lead the country. “I am deeply convinced that Mikheil Kavelashvili will bring constitutional order back to the state of affairs disrupted by Salome Zurabishvili’s unconstitutional and anti-Georgian behavior,” he said.
Matikashvili also criticized Zurabishvili for her actions as president. He said it was time for her to find a new job. “It is time for Zurabishvili to seek a new job,” he stated.
The country’s Christmas and New Year’s celebrations were disrupted by opposition protests against Kavelashvili’s election. Matikashvili called these actions shameful. “Zurabishvili should indeed look for a new job. She has ended her term on a very disappointing note, serving as a reminder of how a president of this country should not behave,” he said.
