**Deported Ukrainian Teen Commits Suicide in Russia**
An 18-year-old Ukrainian boy, Oleksandr Yakushchenko, was found dead in a Russian foster home. He had been deported from the Russian-occupied Kherson Oblast in 2022.
According to reports, Yakushchenko lived with his family-type orphanage before the Russian invasion. When the village of Tokarivka near Kherson was occupied, his caretaker Lidia Sharvarly became a collaborator with the Russian authorities and fled to Russia with several children, including Yakushchenko.
He was placed in a Russian foster family where he lived for eight months before committing suicide. The foster family denied responsibility for the teen’s death, saying they had given him food and shelter but couldn’t kick him out since he was an adult at the time of his death.
However, Yakushchenko’s biological mother does not believe her son committed suicide. She says she talked to him a month before his death and that he seemed happy. His younger sister also lives in Russia with a foster family, but their mother doesn’t know what happened to her.
The Ukrainian Ombudsman estimates that up to 150,000 Ukrainian children have been unlawfully deported by Russia.
