Ukraine Thanks Turkey for Blocking Russia’s Sea Route
Turkey blocked a sea route that Russia needed to capture key Ukrainian ports. This made it harder for Russia to get more troops and supplies.
The Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, which connect the Black Sea to other seas, were closed in 2022. This stopped Russia from getting what it needed to take over Ukraine’s coastal cities like Odesa and Mykolaiv.
Ukraine has been able to destroy many of Russia’s ships since February 2022. In fact, they have damaged or destroyed about a quarter of Russia’s large Black Sea Fleet ships. These include the flagship missile cruiser Moskva.
Turkey enforced an international treaty called the Montreux Convention. This meant that Russia couldn’t send more troops and supplies to Ukraine through the sea route. As a result, Ukraine has been able to keep degrading Russia’s naval assets in the region.
The Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey said that this move was crucial in protecting Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. He thanked Turkey for its help in blocking Russia’s sea route.
