**Ukrainian Doctor Finds Safe Haven in the UK**
Dr. Olga Pantas, a Ukrainian doctor living in the UK, has spoken about her terrifying experience during the war in Ukraine. She and her family were forced to shelter in a basement for three weeks, with no food or sleep.
“I was sure we would die,” Dr. Pantas said. “It was like a nightmare that didn’t end.” Her family had been living on the Russian-Ukrainian border when the war broke out. They managed to escape and find temporary refuge in Croatia before being encouraged by friends in the UK to come and settle there.
**A Safe Haven**
Dr. Pantas is now preparing for a medical test that will allow her to practice medicine in the UK. She has been volunteering at a hospital in Wiltshire, where she has received a warm welcome from the community. The Homes for Ukraine scheme has welcomed over 1,600 “guests” to Wiltshire alone.
“I’m really grateful,” Dr. Pantas said. “I feel safe here.” Her children are also thriving in their new home. Her daughter, who is studying international relations at university, is determined to make a difference and help change the world.
**Concern for Family Left Behind**
Despite her newfound safety, Dr. Pantas is still worried about her family members who stayed behind in Ukraine. She checks the news every night, hoping against hope that they are safe. She has lost faith in diplomacy as a solution to the conflict and believes that Ukrainians will always have to fight for their freedom.
“I’m proud of our military,” she said. “They’re keeping this front going and saving my family.” Dr. Pantas hopes to work as a doctor in Swindon when she is able to, using her skills to help others who are going through similar experiences.
