**Poland to Make Military Training Compulsory for All Men**
The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, has announced plans to make military training compulsory for all adult men in the country. In a speech to parliament, Tusk said that efforts are being made to “prepare large-scale military training” for every male citizen.
**Why is This Necessary?**
Tusk explained that Poland needs to increase its army size to 500,000 soldiers, including reservists, from around 200,000 now. He cited the example of Ukraine’s army, which has 800,000 soldiers, and Russia’s army, which has around 1.3 million soldiers. Tusk wants Poland to have an army that is comparable in size to these countries.
**Military Training for Women?**
While military training will be compulsory for all men, women may also undergo training on a voluntary basis. However, Prime Minister Tusk said that “war is still to a greater extent the domain of men”.
**Increased Defence Spending**
Poland already plans to spend 4.7% of its economic output on defence this year, the highest proportion in the Nato alliance. Tusk wants this spending to increase to 5% of GDP.
