**Former Official Arrested Over Illegal Building Scandal**
A former official in the Belgrade government was arrested on suspicion of approving the legalization of several buildings that were constructed illegally. Nemanja Stajic, a former secretary of the Secretariat for Legalization of Buildings, was taken into custody by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Stajic’s brother, Novak, was also arrested in connection with the case. This is not the first time that Nemanja Stajic has run into trouble with the law. In 2018, a complaint was filed against him for allegedly registering apartments and commercial spaces for officials of the ruling party without following proper regulations.
In January 2021, Stajic was detained at the border with Montenegro while trying to leave the country. Police seized over €26,000 in cash, five laptops, and 11 Serbian flags from him and other individuals. At the time, Stajic claimed that they were being targeted because of their nationality.
In a separate case, six people were arrested on suspicion of constructing buildings without proper permits. The arrests were made by the Third Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, with the help of police and city officials.
