Fire at Elderly Home in Belgrade Leaves 8 Dead, 7 Injured
A fire broke out on Monday at an elderly care facility in the Barajevo municipality of Belgrade. The fire resulted in eight people dying and seven being injured.
Investigations suggest that the fire was caused by arson. The Minister for Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, Nemanja Starovic, told Serbian state TV (RTS) that the facility had a valid license and met all necessary fire safety requirements.
The government has announced that Wednesday will be a day of mourning to honor the victims. The Prime Minister of Serbia, Milos Vucevic, made this announcement.
Firefighters responded quickly to put out the large-scale fire. 13 residents were safely evacuated from the building, but eight people died in the fire. Alternative accommodation has been arranged for those who survived.
Teams are still searching the premises to make sure there are no remaining hotspots that could reignite a new fire. The acting head of the Interior Ministry‘s emergency sector, Luka Causic, said “This is a big tragedy, but it could have been even worse.”
