Ekaterina Barabash, a journalist who recently escaped Russia, shares her insights on the Russian public’s perception of the war in Ukraine. She notes that many Russians didn’t care or understand the situation, even among those who were anti–Putin. The war was seen as a small conflict in eastern Ukraine, and the annexation of Crimea was misunderstood as a historical fact rather than an illegal act.
Barabash points out that most people in Russia rely on state-controlled media for information, and when presented with alternative sources, they often claim “everyone lies.” She believes it’s impossible to change their minds and that many are more concerned with avoiding consequences than seeking the truth.
She advises people who care about the situation but are scared or unable to leave Russia to stay silent. However, those who can leave should do so, as Russia is not a place to stay in her opinion.
