Ukraine’s energy system is facing 2-3 years of power restrictions due to Russian attacks, according to an expert. The damaged power grid will struggle with cold weather.
Energy Research Center Director Oleksandr Kharchenko warns that electricity consumption restrictions may remain in effect for another 2-3 years. Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s energy facilities with missile and drone assaults since October 2022.

Kharchenko says that even if the country recovers from these attacks, certain supply restrictions will last a long time. He estimates this to be around 2-3 years. The expert notes that shutdowns might be reduced under certain weather conditions and circumstances.
**Ukraine’s Energy System Under Attack**
Since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has endured 13 massive attacks on its energy system. This has resulted in a significant power deficit. The latest attack occurred on Christmas Day, leading to power outage schedules across the country.
**War Crime Allegations**
Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Serhii Kyslytsia, told the UN Security Council that Russia launched over 1,100 cruise and ballistic missiles at the country’s energy facilities. He accused Russia of committing a war crime by targeting civilians, children, and first responders.
