**European Parliament Group Supports Serbian Student Protests**
The Socialist and Democrat European Parliament group has expressed solidarity with student protests in Serbia. The protests are over the deaths of 15 people at a train station in Novi Sad.
The students are demanding justice and accountability for the tragedy. They are also protesting against corruption and the government’s handling of the situation. The European Parliament group supports their right to protest and condemns any violence or intimidation against them.
A representative of the group, Kathleen Van Brempt, said that they are closely following the protests. She expressed concern about the restricted functioning of the Serbian parliament. Van Brempt stated that Serbia must respect European values and rules if it wants to progress towards EU membership.
Tonino Picula, who is responsible for monitoring Serbia’s accession negotiations, condemned reports of violence against students. He said that any form of intimidation or violence against protesters is unacceptable.
The group reiterated its call for Serbia to uphold European values such as democracy, human rights, and fundamental freedoms. They also called on the country to provide credible information to the public rather than spreading false narratives.
