According to Deutsche Welle, Kaupo Rosin, the Head of Estonia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, believes that even if the war in Ukraine is frozen, the military aggression will not be over. He emphasizes the importance of Ukraine’s victory for long-term peace and states that in the ongoing war of attrition, the side with more will and resources will ultimately prevail. This requires additional weapons and support from the West for Kyiv.
Rosin is convinced that the current Russian regime must be strategically defeated. He believes that even if Putin partially achieves his goals, he will continue to pursue them. Therefore, the war in Ukraine will not end in the medium term, even if a frozen conflict is reached. Rosin disagrees with the views of Western politicians who wish to quickly resolve the military conflict through diplomacy and compromise with Russia. He believes that a reset of relations with Moscow is not possible or inevitable.
Rosin stresses the need for Ukraine to receive additional weapons and ammunition. He believes that the West should not hold back in providing any type of support that Ukraine needs. Estonia’s Defense Minister, Hanno Pevkur, has also stated that the country intends to order weapons from its own defense-industrial complex to assist Ukraine.
Estonia plans to restructure its aid for Ukraine and focus on domestic defense production. This year, Estonia will provide military aid worth about 100 million euros, which is equivalent to 0.25% of its gross domestic product.
