**EU Imposes New Sanctions on Russia**
The European Union has approved its 16th package of sanctions against Russia. This move comes in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which started three years ago.
**What Do the Sanctions Target?**
The new measures target various sectors, including:
* Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers
* Banks and aluminum imports
* The Russian military and industrial complex
**Who Is Affected by the Sanctions?**
Forty-eight individuals and 35 entities are listed in the latest package of sanctions. This includes additional vessels used to evade sanctions, bringing the total number to 153.
**Other International Developments**
Australia has introduced its most extensive package of sanctions since the beginning of the war. New Zealand imposed restrictions on over 50 individuals and entities.
Russia launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine’s third anniversary of full-scale invasion. Ukrainian air defenses shot down 113 drones, while 71 decoy drones were lost without causing damage.
**Global Response**
The U.S. Secretary of State said that any settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war would include relief from economic restrictions imposed on Moscow. However, EU Economy and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis responded that Brussels must take greater control of its sanctions policy against Russia as US priorities shift.
Sweden has announced a transfer of air defense systems worth 1.2 billion Swedish krona (approximately $113 million) to Ukraine.
