Carl Hartzell, EU Ambassador in Georgia, met with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. The meeting’s details are not known at this time. However, it is likely that the sides discussed the current political climate in the country, and the recent statement made by MEPs.
Yesterday, members of the European Parliament released a joint statement about the recent failure of political leadership in Georgia to reach a deal with Christian Danielsson’s mediation, the personal envoy for European Council President Charles Michel.
“We are deeply dismayed with the political leaders of Georgia for their failure to reach an accord last Tuesday, despite the best efforts made by the European Union to put an end to the present political crisis. The ruling party and the main opposition parties involved in the discussions share the blame for the outcome. However, the party in power bears a particular responsibility.
The statement reads: “The European Parliament will demand consequences in terms of EU Financial Assistance, including both a suspending of further disbursements and an increase in conditions linked to EU Macro Financial Assistance programs and budget support programs.”
