**EU Commissioner Accused of Double Standards**
The European Union’s enlargement commissioner, Marta Kos, is facing criticism for her comments on the freedom of the press in Turkey and Serbia. On social media platform X, Kos called on Turkish authorities to protect independent journalism and maintain freedom of expression. She noted that recent deportations, arrests, punishments, and broadcast bans against the free press were contrary to Turkey’s democratic tradition.

**Less Strict Tone towards Serbia**
About ten days ago, Commissioner Kos posted on X after meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. She described the meeting as “constructive” and emphasized that enlargement is a process that requires society‘s engagement, including strong civil society and independent media. However, her post caused reactions from social network users in Serbia and Slovenia.
Some users pointed out what they saw as Brussels’ hypocrisy and urged Kos to stop making statements perceived as favorable towards Vucic. They called for understanding and help from the EU, not “meaningless” comments. One user even asked how she could be so calm after meeting with someone who had recently tried to harm peaceful citizens.
**Kos Defends Herself**
In an interview with N1 Slovenia, Kos defended herself by saying that her social media posts were a matter of teamwork and that there are 16 people in her cabinet. She acknowledged that people may disagree with her statements but said she understood their concerns.
