New EU Sanctions to Target Russian Disinformation
The European Union is taking a big step against Russia’s disinformation efforts. The EU wants to punish over a dozen people and three groups for spreading false information and interfering with other countries.
This is a new way the EU deals with security threats that aren’t just about war. It shows that the West considers information attacks as serious national security problems. These actions are part of a broader effort to stop Russian influence operations, which go beyond military aggression.
According to Bloomberg, the targets include some Russian intelligence officers and media entrepreneurs. The sanctions also aim at government officials who work with Russia.
The EU is proposing more sanctions on Belarus too. About 25 people will be targeted for their involvement in human rights abuses or their ties to President Alexander Lukashenko‘s government.
EU foreign ministers are set to vote on these proposals next Monday, ahead of elections in Belarus. If approved, the sanctions would be part of a larger package against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Keep in mind that EU sanctions need approval from all member states and might change before they’re finalized.
