Budapest has blocked EUR6.6 billion of military assistance to Ukraine since May 2023.
According to sources who spoke to Euronews under condition of anonymity, EU officials are looking at a plan that would bypass Hungary’s longstanding veto over military assistance to Ukraine, resulting in a backlog amounting to EUR6.6 billion.
The proposed reform to the European Peace Facility would make financial contributions optional, rather than mandatory as they are now. Budapest is expected to accept this change, as it will relieve Hungary’s pro-Russian government of the obligation to contribute to the common fund or support Ukraine’s resistance to Russian invasion.
