The EU believes that the Georgian Dream government’s policy of repression aims to undermine human rights and freedoms. It also wants to reduce the space for civil society groups to operate. The EU thinks this is unacceptable.
**What Has the EU Done So Far?**
The EU has already taken some steps:
* They have downgraded political contacts with Georgia, except for talks about finding a way out of the current situation.
* They have stopped direct aid to the Georgian government worth over €120 million.
* They have put on hold a €30 million support measure for 2024 through the European Peace Facility.
