**Ukraine‘s EU Accession Negotiations to Continue Until 2025**
The European Commission has announced that the screening process of Ukrainian legislation for compliance with EU standards will continue until the fall of 2025. This was reported by European Pravda on January 27, citing a spokesperson from the European Commission.
**Background**
Ukraine applied for EU membership in 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion began. The country has made quick progress and achieved candidate status within months. The initial negotiations process formally launched in June 2024.
**Next Steps**
The commission expects to start cluster negotiations with Ukraine in 2025, starting with Cluster I, which covers “Fundamentals.” This is the first step in the EU accession negotiations, during which the commission familiarizes the candidate country with its rights and obligations. The screening report was submitted on January 16.
**Ukraine’s Ambitious Goal**
President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine aims to open five or all six EU accession negotiation clusters in 2025. Under Poland’s rotating presidency, Ukraine will open two or three negotiation clusters in the first six months of 2025, and three more during the second half of the year under the Danish presidency.
