**EU to Buy More Gas from US and Other Countries**
The European Union wants to buy more gas from the United States and other countries. This is because it needs to replace Russian gas, which has been reduced due to Moscow‘s invasion of Ukraine.
Europe was getting most of its energy from Russia before this happened. But Gazprom, a Russian company, started reducing gas flows to Europe. As a result, European gas imports from Russia have dropped by 75%. This is according to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
**Renewable Energy to Become Bigger Part of Mix**
The EU also wants to develop renewable energy faster. This will help reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and make it less reliant on Russian energy.
“We need to produce our own energy instead of paying for gas that goes into Putin’s war chest,” said EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. This means the EU is looking to build more wind farms, solar panels, and other renewable energy facilities.
**Changes Needed to Get Renewable Energy Projects Built Faster**
The EU needs to change its rules so it can get these projects built faster. This will help reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian gas.
“We will still need gas, but we will have to find sources other than Russia,” said Jorgensen. The US has been exporting more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe to replace Russian energy.
