EU Citizens Back Union at Record Levels
The European Union is experiencing its highest ever approval rating among citizens. A recent survey, known as the Winter Eurobarometer, has found that three-quarters of EU citizens believe their country has benefited from membership.
This is the best result since the question was first asked in 1983. The survey involved face-to-face interviews with over 26,000 people across all 27 EU countries.
Growing concerns about global security are driving this approval. Sixty-six percent of Europeans want the EU to play a more significant role in protecting them from crises and threats. Defense and security is now the top concern for many, with 36% of respondents ranking it as their main priority.
The EU faces increasing pressure to strengthen its defenses. The US President’s actions have raised alarm bells in Europe. Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine has also led countries to call for higher defense spending across NATO.
Most people want the European Parliament to do more and be more decisive. Sixty-two percent support expanding its role, while 43% want it to focus on tackling inflation and rising costs of living.
