**German Party Reiterates Support for Ukraine**
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), a major German political party, has reaffirmed its backing for Ukraine ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections. According to reports from European Pravda on December 14, the CDU included support for Ukraine in its election platform.
**Support Package Unchanged**
In its foreign and security policy section, the CDU promised to continue providing Ukraine with “all necessary diplomatic, financial, humanitarian, and military assistance.” This pledge remains unchanged from previous promises made by the party.
**Increased Defense Spending Suggested**
The New Voice of Ukraine reported that the CDU is advocating for a minimum defense spending limit of 2% of Germany’s GDP. This aligns with NATO‘s target, but does not propose increasing the threshold further.
**Sanctions Against Russia to Remain in Place**
In addition to its support for Ukraine, the CDU has called for maintaining and intensifying sanctions against Russia if necessary.
**Party Chairman Visits Ukraine**
CDU party chairman Friedrich Merz traveled to Kyiv on December 9 to gain insight into ending the conflict and achieving lasting peace. While there, he emphasized the party’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through financial aid, humanitarian assistance, and military equipment.
**Tough Stance Against Russia**
Merz proposed issuing an ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin to cease aggression. If that fails, he suggested removing restrictions on long-range strikes and supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
