Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, said that the U.S. military needs to replace its “useless tanks” with AI-powered drones on October 30, Bloomberg reported.
Schmidt, speaking at the Future Investment Initiative Conference in Saudi Arabia said that Russia’s conflict in Ukraine demonstrated how a “$5,000 Drone can destroy a tank worth $5 million.”
Forbes reports that Schmidt has quietly been building a startup for the production military drones in the U.S.A. and Ukraine. The White Stork Project aims to produce unmanned aerial vehicles that are resistant to GPS jamming and use artificial intelligence, according to the outlet.
The former CEO of Google, and the ex-chairman, Alphabet, of its parent, also supports the startup Istari. Its goal is to modernize the U.S. Military with cutting-edge AI technologies.
Schmidt, a former advisor to U.S. Defense officials on emerging technologies, said that the cost of autonomy was falling so rapidly that the drone war – the future of conflict – would eventually eliminate tanks, artillery and mortars.
Schmidt believes that Western militaries adapt too slowly to the new technology trends on the modern battlefield.
Ukraine and Russia were the pioneers of drone technology during the full-scale conflict. Kyiv has used cheaper drones to offset its limited resources when compared with Moscow or NATO militaries.
Ukrainian drones were used to destroy the Russian Black Sea Fleet. They dropped molten metal onto Russian positions and intercepted Russian helicopters.
Some military experts cautioned against dismissing traditional weapons systems such as tanks as obsolete.
In an article for War on the Rocks, defense expert Rob Lee stated that “the wars in Ukraine (in 2020) and Nagorno Karabakh (in 2021) both show the importance of mobile armored platform with firepower.”
The analyst attributed the tank losses Russian forces experienced in the early phases of the war to a lack of combined weapons and weak logistics.

The city authorities reported that Russian drones attacked Kyiv overnight on October 30, 2010.

The Financial Times reported that Ukraine and Russia have begun preliminary discussions to stop attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure.
