**Ukraine Considers Using Patriot System Against Russian Missiles**
The Ukrainian government is thinking about using its American-made Patriot missile system to stop Russian medium-range missiles from hitting their territory. This might seem like an unlikely task, as the Patriots are not designed for this purpose.
However, experts in Ukraine say it’s worth a try. Oleh Katkov, editor-in-chief of Defence Express, says that even though the Patriots aren’t meant to destroy intermediate-range ballistic missiles, they have shown the ability to intercept other types of Russian missiles in the past.
**Russia Launches New Type of Missile**
On November 21, Russia launched an intermediate-range missile against Dnipro. This was a new type of attack for Ukraine, and it’s not clear what kind of damage was done. An investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the destruction.
**Can Patriots Intercept Russian Missiles?**
Katkov notes that the specifications for the Patriot system don‘t mention intercepting missiles of this range. However, he also points out that the Patriots have successfully intercepted other types of Russian missiles in the past.
He says that the key issue is not the range of the missile, but rather what it’s carrying. This particular missile was designed to deliver a nuclear strike and has a re-entry warhead with individual guidance blocks.
**Other Systems Can Do the Job**
Katkov believes that systems like THAAD or SM-3 could be more effective in intercepting Russian missiles of this type. These systems can destroy missiles before they release their warheads, which would make it easier to stop them.
In fact, Katkov says that an SM-3 system would be the best choice for this task. It can destroy missiles in space, making it harder for them to cause damage.
