Expert: Moldova should prioritize economic development and social cohesion as Russia-backed forces exploit divisions within the country to push an anti European agenda.
Anastasia Pociumban, from the German Council on Foreign Relations(DGAP), told Ukrinform that Moldova’s recent presidential election saw significant foreign interference and manipulation. She warns that as the 2025 parliamentary election approaches, Moldova could face increased Russian influence efforts.
Transnistria is a region of Moldova that is situated between Romania, a NATO and EU member state, and Ukraine. It has been under Russian influence since the early 1990s, with Russian troops stationed in Transnistria. Russia has been trying to bring Moldova back under its influence for years, destabilizing its pro-EU government to install pro-Russian allies at the top.
Pociumban said that although Maia Sandu won the presidential election, the narrow margins of support among local voters suggest ongoing divisions in Moldovan society.
