Farmers Protest in Serbia
A group of farmers from Raca, central Serbia, are holding a protest against the local government. They have been blocking the town’s main road since Tuesday.
The farmers occupied the municipal administration building on Tuesday morning. They plan to stay there day and night until their demands are met. One of the farmers, Milan Milosevic, spoke to N1 news channel on Wednesday morning.
Milosevic said that the night had passed peacefully but expressed surprise at how the municipality functions. He noted that more than half of the municipal staff failed to show up for work.
“This is strange,” said Milosevic. “We are paying taxes and contributions, yet they’re not showing up for work.” He also mentioned that the municipal head, Branko Radosavljevic, has locked himself in his office and refused to talk to the farmers.
The farmers’ demands include reducing the local property tax by 60 percent. They want the tax to be reverted to last year’s level. The municipality offered some solutions, but the farmers rejected them.
