Finnish President Warns of Uncertainty in Ukraine‘s Future
Alexander Stubb, the Finnish President, has told Bloomberg that Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Ukraine should be taken seriously. This comes after Trump’s victory in the 2024 US Presidential election added uncertainty to Ukraine’s future military aid and defense.
Stubb spoke with Trump on November 11 and said his intentions for the time after he takes office in January 2025 are clear. He emphasized that Europe and other parts of the world must understand that Trump is serious about getting a deal sooner rather than later.
There’s a window for these negotiations to take place between the election day and the inauguration. Trump has repeatedly said that he will end the war in Ukraine in “24 hours,” but hasn’t elaborated on his plan, which is expected to involve Ukraine ceding territory to Russia.
Stubb outlined four conditions for peace in Ukraine: territorial stability, security guarantees, justice, and reconstruction. He also noted that Trump’s foreign policy may differ from that of his predecessor, as Trump plans to name Republican Senator Marco Rubio as the next US Secretary of State.
Rubio has said that Russia’s war against Ukraine has reached a stalemate and needs a conclusion. However, he voted no on a $61 billion package of aid for Ukraine in April 2024.
