Financial Times (FT), Oct. 15, reported that Elina Valtonen, Finnish Foreign Minister, warned that the West is tired of its support for Ukraine and called for a stronger commitment to backing Kyiv.
“It’s real. Valtonen remarked that the Western fatigue is increasing, saying some partners are hoping for an earlier resolution.
As the uncertain U.S. elections approach, concerns about the future of Western assistance grow. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee and former President, said he wanted to “get the U.S. out” of the conflict, sparking fears Washington, the country that has led the pro-Kyiv coalition, could scale back or withdraw its support.
According to Finland’s diplomat chief, the ongoing conflict of the Middle East has diverted attention and resource from Ukraine.
“These two conflicts, of course, are very closely linked. But for us Europeans it is important to realize that, if we let Russia win in Ukraine, we will essentially lose the credibility of our deterrence,” Valtonen said.
Israel has launched airstrikes against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, while war continues in Gaza.
Iran is the main supporter of Hezbollah, Hamas and other terrorist groups, including Hamas which attacked Israel in October last year. Iran has also developed close ties with Russia in recent years, supplying Moscow drones and rockets for the war against Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelensky, facing the increasing economic and social pressures of the war and the weakening resolve of the allies, has called for “decisive actions” by international partners to end this war by 2025.
The president is trying rally international support for his country’s winning plan, which he has presented to Western leaders. It will be partially revealed to the public on October 16.
