**Investigation Underway into Damaged Subsea Cables in the Baltic Sea**
A tanker ship, called the Eagle S, is being investigated for damaging subsea cables in the Baltic Sea. The ship’s anchor was found to have dragged on the seabed, causing extensive damage to several underwater communication cables.
The Finnish authorities reported that they had discovered surveillance equipment on board the detained tanker. This equipment was capable of monitoring both aircraft and maritime traffic. The marks left by the anchor were seen over several kilometers and are believed to be connected to the damaged cables.
**Possible Aggravated Criminal Mischief**
The investigation is looking into possible aggravated criminal mischief. A 170-kilometer (105-mile) electricity line break connecting Finland and Estonia was caused by a severed power link, in addition to four underwater data cables being disrupted.
Challenging weather conditions have hindered the investigation. The authorities had difficulty examining the Eagle S and conducting further underwater inspections.
**Regional Security Measures**
In response to these incidents, NATO and regional countries have implemented heightened security measures. The EU has also announced plans for sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet.
**Investigations into Other Incidents**
The incident is part of a larger pattern of suspected Russian interference in the region. In November, a Chinese cargo ship was detained by the Royal Danish Navy after it damaged vital Baltic Sea telecommunications cables. The captain of the ship was identified as a Russian citizen.
**Accusations of Hybrid Warfare Tactics**
Investigations into these events have led to accusations that Russia is using hybrid warfare tactics against NATO countries. These tactics are aimed at destabilizing the region and exerting political pressure.
