On 7 October and in the early hours of the next day, Russian forces launched a series of attacks on Odesa Oblast and other regions of Ukraine, employing ballistic missiles and Shahed drones, according to reports from Ukrainian officials.
Russia continues its deliberate daily air attacks on residential areas in attempts to terrorize civilians and damage civilian infrastructure. The Russian forces launch dozens of Shahed long-range “kamikaze” drones every night, often also launching several missiles during the attack. The Russians also intensified the guided bomb strikes, targeting residential neighborhoods of Ukrainian cities.
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that overnight on 8 October, Russian occupiers struck Odesa Oblast with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles launched from occupied Crimea. Additionally, 19 Shahed one-way attack drones were launched from the Russian city of Primorsko-Akhtarsk. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 18 of these drones, with one drone returning to Russia, according to the report.
Ukraine’s air defenses were active in Odesa, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Vinnytsia, and Ternopil oblasts.
Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Oblast Military Administration, stated via Telegram that Russian aggressors terrorized the region with strike drones for four hours, from midnight until dawn. The air defense forces destroyed most of the Shaheds, with no casualties reported.
However, the attack resulted in a fire in an apartment building in Chornomorsk, affecting apartments on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors. Firefighters promptly extinguished the blaze, which covered an area of 100 square meters. In the Odesa district, an administrative and industrial building sustained damage to its ceilings and walls, leading to a fire that was contained to 50 square meters, Kiper says.
On the evening of 7 October, Odesa experienced explosions as Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on a civilian vessel flying the flag of Palau. The strike resulted in the death of a 60-year-old Ukrainian working for a private company and injured five foreign citizens, as reported by Oleh Kiper.
On the morning of 7 October, Russia attacked Ukraine with Kinzhal missiles, with Ukrainian air defenses intercepting two out of three. One missile hit the area of the airfield in Starokostiantyniv. Debris from two downed missiles was found in four districts of Kyiv.
