Russia Labels Outlet as Terrorist

The (FSB) has labeled the independent media outlet Komi Daily “terrorist organization.” This is the first time the FSB has such a designation against a media outlet.

Komi Daily, known for its coverage of and daily life in ‘s northwestern Komi Republic, has been critical of Russia’s invasion of . The outlet has faced increasing state pressure, including website blockages and fines against its editor for alleged incitement.

The FSB claims that Komi Daily is linked the Free Nations of Post-Russia Forum, a movement advocating for the decentralization and decolonization of Russia by dismantling it into 41 autonomous states. However, the outlet denies any affiliation with the forum.

This move by the FSB marks an escalation in Russia’s suppression of dissenting voices, particularly independent media critical of the Kremlin. The Supreme finalized the designation in late December, making Komi Daily the first media outlet to receive such a label.

The FSB’s actions are part of a broader crackdown on independent journalism in Russia. Many journalists have been forced into exile due to increasing pressure from the government.
