Overnight on November 8, local authorities reported that Russian forces attacked Kyiv, and the surrounding Oblast, with drones and missiles.
In recent months, Russian drone attacks against Kyiv and other Ukrainian towns have increased. However, the use missiles in aerial attacks has decreased significantly.
Experts told the Kyiv Independent that this could be a strategy to wear down the air defenses before a massive missile strike on the country’s already battered civil energy infrastructure.
The air raid alert was sounded in Kyiv at around 9:30 pm local time on November 7, but the all-clear was not given until just after 7 am the next morning.
Around 10 p.m. local, the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration announced that air defense was in operation.
The Ukrainian Air Force announced that the missile would be launched at dawn, around 5:30 am local time. Ukrainian forces did not specify which type.
Kyiv Independent journalists heard a loud blast shortly after.
Since early October 2024, no Russian missiles have been launched near or above Kyiv.
According to local authorities, neither the drones nor the missiles hit their targets. However, debris from the downed aerial targets caused damage to buildings and injured civilians throughout Kyiv Oblast.
Four men in Kyiv Oblast suffered injuries of various severity. Regional police reported that all four men were hospitalized.
Ruslan Kravchenko, regional governor, said: “These are the car drivers who were in the cars near the place where debris fell.”
“One of the drivers is in a serious condition, while two other drivers are in a moderate condition.” The other driver suffered minor injuries. “All are receiving medical care.”
The attack caused damage to six houses and four vehicles. A fire was also extinguished in the premises of an old gas station and on the grass flooring.
As of the morning on Nov. 8, Kyiv’s local authorities had not reported any damages or casualties and the air defense system was not operating.
Five times, guided aerial bombs were used by Russia to strike Zaporizhzhia. The attack damaged houses, an apartment building and a cancer hospital.

Since Ukraine launched its cross-border offensive at the beginning of August, Kursk Oblast has been a scene of heavy fighting.
This includes 1,580 casualties that Russian forces have suffered in the last day.
The attack caused damage to multiple residential buildings as well as a local primary school. According to preliminary information, one person died and nine others were injured.
Local authorities reported that at least 25 people were injured, and that there may be more trapped under the rubble. Search and rescue operations continue at the building.
Lindner said that Scholz had fired the former Finance Minister Christian Lindner because he suggested sending Ukraine Taurus rockets instead of financial assistance, Lindner said.
Sabrina Singh, Deputy Pentagon press secretary, said Washington was “confident” it could fulfill its commitments towards Kyiv.
