**Russian Troops Killed 5 Ukrainian Soldiers**
On October 1, Russian troops shot and killed five captured Ukrainian soldiers near the town of Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast. This was announced by the Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office on November 22.
The killing of prisoners of war is a serious crime under international law. The Geneva Conventions prohibit the killing or mistreatment of POWs.
**Investigation Launched**
An investigation into the killings has been launched by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU). According to the SBU, Russian troops captured the five Ukrainian soldiers on October 1 as they retreated from their positions near Vuhledar. The soldiers were unarmed and did not pose a threat.
The prosecutors said that the Russian military killed one of the soldiers in a forest area and took four others to the road at gunpoint, where they shot them dead.
**More Killings Reported**
This is not the first report of Russian troops killing Ukrainian POWs in Donetsk Oblast. In mid-November, two Ukrainian soldiers were shot dead by Russian troops in the Pokrovsk district. The prosecutors said that the soldiers were stripped naked and killed on the spot.
**Investigations Continue**
Law enforcement officers are currently investigating 53 criminal proceedings related to the executions of 177 Ukrainian soldiers. In 2024 alone, there were 37 proceedings into the executions of 109 Ukrainian soldiers.
