Taiwan Sends Air Defense System to Ukraine
The Taiwanese government has sent a significant number of air defense systems to Ukraine. These systems, known as HAWK batteries, will make up almost a third of Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
This move is part of Taiwan‘s support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Despite not joining Western sanctions against Russia and having tensions with China, Taiwan has provided Ukraine with critical air defense systems.
The HAWK system is 60 years old but still very effective. It is mobile and reliable, making it useful against drones and cruise missiles as well as aircraft. The system’s missiles can also be integrated with modern air defense systems used by Ukraine.
This move will help diversify Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Taiwan has been phasing out its own HAWK batteries since 2015. By sending these to Ukraine, Taiwan is providing a vital source of missile supply for Ukraine to maintain its air defense against Russian attacks.
Ukraine’s air defense force has been transitioning away from Soviet-era systems to Western ones since the conflict began. This donation will help Ukraine strengthen its defenses and counter ongoing Russian attacks.
