The upgrades are designed to preserve the remaining tanks in the face of losses and limited replacements. Potential reinforcements from Australia is also being considered.
On 7 October, Ukraine’s elite 47th Mechanized Brigade revealed significant upgrades to their remaining M1 Abrams tank, demonstrating the country’s efforts to adapt battlefield threats in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The 47th Mechanized Brigade, which had been engaged in intense combat for 15 months in some of the bloodiest battles of the war, rotated off of the eastern frontline early last month. The brigade brought with it the survivors from the 31 M1 Abrams tanks made in the United States that originally equipped its tank battalion.
The 47th Mechanized posted a video on Telegram showing the M1s of the unit fitted with advanced protection systems. Forbes notes that these modifications include US-made armor blocks and Ukrainian armor blocks on turrets and sides, as well locally-made anti-drone cages and radio jammers for FPV drones.
