Serbia Loses Gas Supply from Azerbaijan
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced that Azerbaijan has stopped sending gas to Serbia. This is because Azerbaijan is facing problems and has declared a “force majeure”.
A force majeure is a situation where something unexpected happens, making it impossible for someone to keep an agreement. In this case, it means that Azerbaijan will no longer send the 1.7 million cubic meters of gas that Serbia was receiving daily.
Vucic met with US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma and assured citizens that Serbia has enough gas reserves to cover the shortage. He said that using these reserves would be a good solution and that there would be no gas shortages in the country.
Serbia’s oil company NIS faced sanctions from the United States just one day before Azerbaijan stopped sending gas. The US wanted Russia to give up its ownership stake in NIS. This move by the US may have contributed to Azerbaijan’s decision to stop sending gas to Serbia.
