In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia expressed its serious concern over the conclusions of international and local independent observers regarding the parliamentary election of Georgia.
The agency stresses that the elections took place in a context of political polarization and tension between the political powers and the opposition.
“At the time, and especially in the current situation, we welcome the great interest that the Georgians have shown in these elections – both in terms of the high turnout, and in terms of the interest of Georgian society to their progress and results,” said the statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia stresses that the observers published a report on serious violations committed during the pre-election and election day. These include intimidation of opposition figures, interference in the electoral process, the use of administrative resources, and pressure on voters.
“Latvia calls upon the Georgian authorities immediately to take measures to investigate the violations revealed and ensure local and global public confidence in the electoral process and protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.” The Georgian government, law enforcement agencies and citizens must respect the right to express themselves in elections that are held in accordance with democratic principles. The Georgian people should evaluate the results of the election,” the statement stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia stresses that it will continue to closely follow the developments in the nation.
