Ukraine Denies Building Nuclear Weapons Plans
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has denied reports that the country is planning to develop nuclear weapons.
According to a statement from Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for the ministry, Ukraine is committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and does not possess or intend to acquire nuclear weapons.
The denial came after The Times reported that Ukraine could quickly build a basic atomic bomb if the US stopped sending military aid.
A briefing paper prepared for the Ukrainian Defense Ministry suggested that Ukraine could use plutonium and technology similar to the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945 to create a simple atomic bomb.
Ukraine has previously denied reports of planning nuclear weapons, including after President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was considering pursuing nuclear capabilities for protection.
Zelensky later clarified that Ukraine is not pursuing nuclear weapons and the comments were made to emphasize the failures of an agreement where Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees from the US, UK, and Russia.
