The National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) in Ukraine has imposed sanctions on former President Petro Poroshenko.
Poroshenko stated that the NSDC’s decision was “unconstitutional” and “politically motivated.” He claimed that the move will have a negative impact on the country‘s unity and its fight against Russia.
**Background to Sanctions**
Poroshenko served as Ukraine’s president from 2014 until 2019. In the 2019 election, he lost to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who won with 73.22% of the vote. Following his defeat, over 20 criminal cases were opened against Poroshenko, including charges of treason.
**Reaction from Kyiv**
Zelensky stated that an official decree will be published on February 13. He emphasized that Ukraine is committed to defending itself and restoring justice, while also holding those responsible for the country’s security breaches accountable.
