**Syria’s Transitional President Named**
Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of Syria’s main rebel group, has been named transitional president. The announcement was made by Syria’s military command on January 29.
Al-Sharaa will lead the country during a transition period. He will represent Syria in international forums and have the power to form a temporary legislative council. This council will carry out its duties until a permanent constitution is enacted and put into effect.
**Rebel Group Leader Has Ties to Terrorist Organization**
Al-Sharaa’s rebel group broke away from al-Qaeda in 2016 to help lead efforts to oust Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. However, this past involvement has raised concerns among Western officials about his intentions.
**Western Officials Cautious**
The EU chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said that the lifting of sanctions on Syria can be reversed if wrong steps are taken. The EU plans to scale up humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts in Syria.
**Al-Sharaa’s Distancing from Russia**
Since taking power, al-Sharaa has distanced himself from Russia. He blocked the withdrawal of Russian military equipment and demanded compensation for past mistakes in Syria. Al-Sharaa also called on Russia to hand over Assad from his asylum.
**Ukraine Ready to Restore Diplomatic Ties with Syria**
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha visited Damascus to meet with al-Sharaa. He expressed Ukraine’s readiness to restore diplomatic ties, trade, and educational exchanges with Syria if the country’s new leadership respects international law and its territorial integrity.
