Come on, Georgians! Don’t let yourselves slide backwards from Europe. Do you really want to end up like Belarus? This is what Michael McFaul, the former US ambassador to Russia, is saying on social media. “Georgians, it’s time to take a stand! Don’t let your pro-Russian leaders lead you down a dangerous path away from Europe,” he wrote. McFaul’s words were in response to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, Josep Borrell, who urged Georgia to repeal the “Family Values and Protection of Minors” law. This law has been met with criticism for its potential to limit freedom of expression and discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community.
It’s disheartening to see Georgia, a country that has made significant progress towards European integration, take steps backwards. This law goes against the values of the European Union and threatens to isolate Georgia from its European allies. It’s a concerning sign that the current government is moving away from the path of democracy and towards authoritarianism.
Georgians, it’s time to speak up and demand that your government upholds the principles of democracy and human rights. Don’t let them take away your freedom and turn Georgia into another Belarus.
