Four European lawmakers have spoken out against the Georgian government’s treatment of its opposition. They say the authorities are using too much force on peaceful protesters and arresting people who disagree with them.
The four politicians – David McAllister, Nils Ushakovs, Sergey Lagodinsky, and Rasa Jukneviciene – made a joint statement. They said that the Georgian government’s actions were not like those of a country trying to join the European Union.
The politicians said that the government had been getting worse at respecting people’s rights. They called for sanctions against leaders who they say are responsible for this.
They also mentioned Bidzina Ivanishvili, the person they think is most to blame. The Georgian president, Salome Zurabishvili, has supported them in their call for more democratic elections.
The four MEPs want Georgia to hold new elections that will be fair and transparent. They support President Zurabishvili’s efforts to keep Georgia on a path towards Europe.
