Hungary’s ambassador to the EU is causing a problem. They want Russia‘s Mikhail Fridman taken off the sanctions list.
The EU has put sanctions on about 2,000 Russians for supporting Ukraine. These sanctions are set to end soon. But Hungary doesn’t want Fridman, who is a Russian oligarch, to be included in these sanctions.
Hungary says that if they don’t get their way, they will block the extension of EU sanctions on all these Russians. This is not good news for Ukraine.
Ukraine’s friends in Europe and America are worried about this. They think it’s not fair to take Fridman off the sanctions list when he supported Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Fridman was put on the sanctions list last year. He said he had been hurt by these sanctions and wanted compensation.
The EU ambassadors are meeting in Brussels to discuss this issue. Hungary’s demand is not popular with all the other countries, though.
