**G20 Summit Fails to Strongly Condemn Russia’s Attacks**
The G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro has ended with a joint statement that avoids strong language condemning Russia’s attacks on Ukraine. Despite calls from European countries for a tougher approach, the summit opted for a milder tone, focusing on the need for a “just and durable peace”.
**Ukraine Marks 1,000 Days of War**
Today, Ukraine marks a grim milestone – 1,000 days since Russia launched its all-out war against the country. The war has resulted in the deaths of at least 12,162 civilians, including 659 children. The total cost for recovery and reconstruction over the next decade could reach around $486 billion.
**Weakening Support for Ukraine**
The joint statement issued after the summit mentions only “negative added impacts of the war” and welcomes initiatives that support a comprehensive, just, and durable peace. This is a significant weakening of support for Ukraine compared to last year’s summit in New Delhi, where there were seven paragraphs dedicated to the war.
**Diplomats Disappointed**
One diplomat from a Western G20 member said, “It is not the language of Ukraine that we would have liked to see.” Another European diplomat expressed disappointment, saying, “The language is not strong enough…there’s nothing on the latest attacks.”
**Central Aspects of the Communiqué**
Despite the lack of strong language condemning Russia, the summit focused on other issues such as effective taxation of the super-rich, measures to reduce poverty, a ceasefire in Gaza, and reform of the Security Council.
