**G7 Reaffirms Support for Ukraine Despite US Tension**
Foreign ministers from the world’s top economies met in Canada and agreed to support Ukraine. The meeting was held despite tensions between the US and its allies over trade policies and other disagreements.
The diplomats from eight countries, including Canada, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the EU, presented a united front on supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty. However, their final statement was less strong than in previous years.
**Softer Tone**
The group’s communiqué condemned Russian “acts of aggression” and reaffirmed Ukraine’s right to exist. But its language was softer than a statement from G7 leaders in November 2024, which promised unwavering support for Ukraine and called Russia the main obstacle to peace.
**Diplomatic Challenges**
The shift in tone reflects the challenges posed by US President Donald Trump’s approach to foreign policy. At times, Trump has questioned US support for Kyiv. During the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced pressure from allies to clarify Washington‘s position on Ukraine.
Rubio emphasized that the US and its partners would not let disagreements stop them from working together on other issues. European ministers made symbolic gestures of solidarity with Ukraine, posting a photo of themselves wearing Canada’s national colors alongside a message of support.
