Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Tbilisi and held a press conference. He advised opposition politicians to start a campaign to explain what will happen if they join Europe.
Landsbergis said that many people don‘t understand the concept of freedom and Europe. They think it’s just about money or being part of the West. But he believes it’s more complicated now. If you promise Europe will bring 10 billion euros, some might say “we have our own money” or “we can borrow from China”.
He used Belarus as an example. The country was sold to Russia and now has economic problems. Landsbergis said this is what happens when a country loses its freedom.
Landsbergis suggested that opposition politicians explain the situation to everyone, not just those who live in big cities or read news. He wants them to understand how joining Europe will affect their children’s future.
He also advised opposition politicians not to wait for new elections. If they don’t have a clear explanation, people might choose the wrong option. Landsbergis ended by saying “don’t wait” and “explain what will happen”.
